«All’occhio, all’udito ed al pensiero»: Filippo Juvarra’s Opera Productions in Rome for Pietro Ottoboni and Marie Casimire Queen of Poland
by Nicola Badolato
The volume provides the critical edition of eleven ‘drammi per musica’ by Pietro Ottoboni, Carlo Sigismondo Capeci and Antonio Salvi, staged in Rome from 1710 to 1714 with scenery by the Messinese architect Filippo Juvarra in the Teatro alla Cancelleria, in the small theatre of Marie Casimire of Poland in Palazzo Zuccari and in the Capranica Theatre, with music by Carlo Pollaroli, Francesco Gasparini, Filippo Amadei, Alessandro and Domenico Scarlatti.
The edition, related to the drawings and engravings by Juvarra in all cases for which the link is confirmed or plausible, and including a concise critical comment investigating the literary sources and circumstances of the representations, aims at providing historians of art, music and culture with a contextualized ‘reading’ of the visual evidence (drawings and engravings) that has been handed down to us about Juvarra’s theatrical activity, in a dramaturgical perspective, which is the precondition for their correct and deep understanding.
