The Compagnia di San Paolo and the Health Service for the Poor in Turin between 1814 and 1851
by Franco Lupano
The book La Compagnia di San Paolo e il Servizio Sanitario per i poveri nella Città di Torino 1814 – 1851 (The Compagnia di San Paolo and the Health Service for the Poor in Turin between 1814 and 1851) was written by Franco Lupano, a Turin family doctor with a passion for studying and researching the history of medicine.
Lupano draws lively sketches of the activity of the Compagnia di San Paolo in the Health field for the relief of the poor in the wake of Restoration: doctors, surgeons, midwives are portrayed in their daily relationship with patients. A section is also devoted to the pharmaceutical service.
A preface by Umberto Levra, professor of History of the Risorgimento at the University of Turin, highlights the results of the research and stresses the innovative angles of this study, which aims at throwing a light on a still little known aspect of the history of health institutions in the nineteenth century.
