Innovations and Resistences in Parisian Painting between the 1720s and the 1730s
by Alessia Rizzo

This research deals with the group of painters called ‘génération de 1700’ (including the famous artists François Boucher, Carle Vanloo, Charles-Joseph Natoire, Pierre-Charles Trémolières, Pierre Subleyras, Jean-Siméon Chardin) taken as a whole, from a point of view ‘generational’, and proceeds by comparison of experiences: their period of study between Paris and the province, the séjourn to the French Academy in Rome and the early successes at the return to France, between the 1720s and the 1730s.

The purpose is to highlight the convergences and divergences of a group of artists who renew Parisian artistic scenery, in the same years, but each acting on their own, with its own peculiarities.

The work followed two lines of research: a comparative study of the painters of the ‘génération de 1700’ style between the 1720s and the 1730s, and the analysis of paintings exhibitions that take place in Paris on several occasions and institutions in same years, from the little-known Expositions de la place Dauphine, to the famous Salons, accompanying hand in hand the formation and affirmation of this group of young artists in France.
